Rev. Dr. Roger VerseToday we welcome Rev. Dr. Roger Verse to Hobe Sound Community Presbyterian Church as Transitional Minister. He will be with us at least through the end of the year or until an installed Pastor is called to our church, whichever comes first.
The Reverend Roger Verse was born in Plainfield, N.J. and grew up in nearby Scotch Plains. As a teen and young adult Roger was affirmed and encouraged to consider a call to ordained ministry both from his home pastor and college professors. His formal education began at Upsala College and continued to Princeton Seminary where he received a M.Div., and Th.M. degrees. He was appointed Master in Residence by President McCord at Princeton for the 1973-74 academic year. He has a certificate in Family Therapy from the New Jersey Center for Family Studies and holds a D.Min., in Marriage and Family Ministry from Eastern Seminary in Philadelphia. Roger has received specialized training in Interim/Transitional Ministry at Montreat Conference Center, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Menucha Conference Center in Portland, Oregon.
Roger was ordained at the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church by the Presbytery of Elizabeth on April 9, 1972. He served two pastorates in New Jersey, Fairmount Presbyterian Church, Califon, and First Presbyterian Church, Iselin, before moving to Florida in 1989. He served interim pastorates in Pembroke Pines, DeLand, and Jupiter before being called to be the Pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale in 1997. As a member of the Presbytery of Tropical Florida, Roger has served on the Committee on Ministry as Chair as well as Session Moderator for vacant churches.
Both Roger and Selma took early retirement in 2007 to travel and be with family. One of the blessings: the opportunity to be present at the birth of each of their six grandchildren and provide support for infant and sibling care.
Roger and Selma have traveled through Germany, Switzerland, England, and Scotland visiting sites specific to the Protestant Reformation. In retirement they have gained appreciation for other cultures through visits to Canada, Central and South America, the Baltic States, and Southern Europe. Roger is also qualified to serve as Guest Staff Minister for specific cruises on the Holland America Cruise Line. On August 1, 2014, Roger interrupted retirement to become Interim Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Boynton Beach, Florida. On March 31, 2017 he successfully concluded this ministry.
After taking a very brief break to enjoy a European cruise vacation, Roger has once again taken on the position of Transitional Minister. We at Hobe Sound Community Presbyterian Church are very fortunate to now benefit from his considerable pastoral and leadership experiences. We welcome you, Dr. Verse.
As a courtesy toward our new Pastor, new members, and new friends, PLEASE WEAR YOUR NAME TAGS WHEN ATTENDING CHURCH. If you don’t have one, see Becky Boynton and she will make one for you.
